I like that explanation -- it's part of what I was aiming for, but said better.

Just remembered one of my favourite poems, If, by Rudyard Kipling. http://www.kipling.org.uk/poems_if.htm

It begins with:
IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;

Humility doesn't require thinking less of yourself, but rather, thinking of yourself less. The idea is to know yourself, know what you can attribute to yourself, and know how much you can attribute to others.

For example, you're smart and well-organized. Those are natural talents you have, and it would be wrong to say, "No, I'm stupid and disorganized." But on the other hand, you've also received the immeasurable blessing of being born in a time and place where you were properly educated and where you have access to books about organization (to help you view a range of organizational techniques) and so on.

The natural outgrowth of humility is generosity. It's almost automatic that once you realize how much you've been given (in the above example, the opportunity for an education) that you realize how that same gift could bless others, and then you begin reaching out in order to help others achieve the same (by, say, storytelling in order to give others the urge to read more.)

I'm not disturbed by the conversation at your place. It's balanced, respectful, and makes me think, but sometimes I realize I'm trying to justify my choices to myself more than adding value to the conversation.

We love you,Cricket. :-) I love having your opinions in my combox. :-) Don't get disturbed over the conversation there, sure, but do keep coming!

I like the concept of "irregulars." I hadn't thought about them that way, but lately I've been noticing more of those around here and doing them when I do other projects. They're not covered in the Motivated Moms calendar because they're particular to this house, but I guess they still need to be done from time to time.

From Dad:

Five sales so far, all in the US (my little blow against "Buy American" policies), and three serious inquiries from overseas. I've been doing my homework re customs and shipping, and will be listing "worldwide" tomorrow or the next day.

I'm convinced that the ready availability of the manual is responsible for most of the sales. It may also be deterring some potential buyers who aren't comfortable with doing this kind of surgery on their radios -- and that's good, because we don't need unhappy customers.

The problem was, I didn't want a dethatch.

We had no thatch to begin with! The brown stuff it dug up was roots, not thatch.

I didn't want to reseed the lawn.

I used SpringMasters in the Hamilton region and I had pretty good service. I've tried other lawncare companies before and I was beginning to feel a little discouraged. Then I had a student stop by by house in the spring and do a core-aeration and tell me about some plan... it sounded good at the time and my lawn needed something so I signed up. Although I had to water my lawn after each time they were there (they said it was more natural products so I had to water them in, probably to get the seed going) All in all I was pretty happy with the results, I did see I difference (mainly in some bald spots I had) and it greened up quite a bit. I did wonder when they were going to be there at first as I signed up with a student at the door when he did the aeration. I called the first time after regular business hours and got a machine but I got a call back the next day explaining when they would be there. Surprisingly they were pretty close to when they said (it was a day after they said, due to alot of rain?) All in all I've tried alot of companies and this one seems alright, I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. At least you got a free dethatch. My wife and I are probably going to use them again next year.

P.S I dethatched my own lawn a few years ago and got the same thing, it is hard on the lawn but after I seeded it, it worked out. Judging by the length of your grass under the picnic table it hadn't been cut in a long time, you would have alot of green grass come up as a dethatcher (at least the one I rented for an arm and a leg) is basically like a vertical lawn mower, so it basically cut your lawn and then kicked up all the thatch. As for not moving the table and pool, thats just lazy. How does your lawn look now after you put the seed down and did you find their seed grew for you?

Re the Shameless Familial Promotion -- only one quibble -- it's not going to be revenue-neutral if we can help it!! We'll pass break-even at around 25 units, and make a good wage at 50.
